Three-dimensional FE modelling of vertical rotors

This project is a continuation of a previous SVC project, Validation of simplified journal bearing models or simulation of vertical rotors. In this project a real hydropower unit will be modelled and validated against measurement data from Vattenfall RDs test rig in Älvkarleby.

Within SVC several models for rotor dynamic have been developed, but only by one dimensional beam models (1D). With three dimensional models (3D) it is possible to include support structures and in detail analyse stress and strain of components. This will give us models to predict fatigue and thereby design better machines. Therefore, the aim of this project is to develop techniques for fast simulations of 3D rotor dynamics.
