Hydropower and asp conservation
This project aims to increase knowledge about the endangered fish species asp and develop effective measures to preserve the species in the Mälardalen and Hjälmaren river basins. Through research and fisheries management efforts, we want to contribute to biodiversity while allowing local hydropower operations to continue without major impact.
The endangered asp is a large fish-eating carp species that relies on functioning habitats in both watercourses and lakes. Historically, canalisation, dams and pollution have reduced the species’ habitats in the Mälardalen region, where there is a great need for fisheries management.
This project focuses on increasing knowledge about the ecology and behaviour of asp and identifying cost-effective measures to facilitate the species’ migration. Areas of work include expanding and optimising an acoustic telemetry network, evaluating passage past power plants and other migration barriers, and mapping important nursery areas.
Through collaboration with hydropower companies, authorities and local stakeholders, the project hopes to improve fisheries management and restoration efforts, not only for asp but also, in the long term, for other migratory fish species in the region.
