Trust in CFD for hydraulic design of open water ways and spillways

The value creation and purpose of this project is to provide the "numerical simulation community" with a set of detailed experiments of spillway flows for validation of numerical codes - quality and trust. As a result of this project, there will also be a recommendation on how to perform numerical simulations/calculations of discharge capacity, i.e. when to use 3D, 2D, 1D, or hand calculations in order to achieve expected accuracy and in the long run an increased dam safety.

Numerical simulations (10, 2D, and 3D) are today a standard tool in many industries in fluid component design and in hydraulic engineering projects. For fluid component design, there exist several well-established validation cases (ERCOFTAC) but for hydraulic engineering projects there is a lack of large-scale detailed validation cases and hence the accuracy (quality and trust) of numerical simulations can be questioned. In order to increase the efficiency of numerical simulations it is important to understand when to use 3D, 2D, 1D, or hand calculations in order to achieve expected accuracy.
