SVC Research school Autumn 2026

The autumn research school will take place from 19 to 23 October. The first part of the week (October 19-21) is an Introduction to rock foundations for dams. The second part of the week is an Introduction to fluid dynamics in water turbines.

Introduction to rock foundations for dams contains the following sections:
• Introduction and Background
• Rock as a construction material
• Stability of concrete dams founded on rock
• Reliability of dams including FORM and Monte Carlo simulations
• Design of grout curtains

After completion of the course the student will:

  • Understand the fundamental differences between rock as a construction material and other types of manufactured materials such as steel and concrete
  • know the fundamentals of stability analyses of concrete dams founded on rock
  • be able to calculate the reliability of the dam using first order reliability based methods and Monte Carlo simulations
  • Know the basics in the design of grout curtains under dams
  • Be able to perform basic calculations for the design of grout curtains under dams

Examiner is Fredrik Johansson, KTH Royal Institute of Technology, Department of Civil and Architectural Engineering

Introduction to fluid dynamics in water turbines contains the following sections:
• Introduction and background
• Water turbine types and their operating ranges
• Basic principles
• Dimensional analysis and scaling effects
• Losses and flow imperfections
• Cavitation
• Principles of CFD in water turbines

After completion of the course the student will:

  • know the fundamental of fluid mechanics in turbomachinery
  • understand the basics of design and analysis of water turbines
  • be familiar with dimensional analysis and scaling effects of water turbines
  • be able to make a global estimation of the turbine system, using the Bernoulli equation
  • have the basic knowledge about the cavitation process in water turbines and how to avoid it
  • know the basics of how to study water turbines using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD)

Examiner is Håkan Nilsson, Chalmers University of Technology, Department of Mechanical Engineering, Division of Fluid Dynamics
